Leh Ladakh Trip Log 2010
Today’s evening is going to be on Dal lake this was the first thought in our minds when we got up. Most of us were awake before sunrise and in just 20-25mins were ready and outside. By now packing the luggage everyday on the bike had got little annoying but the weather around was compensating for that.

By the time everyone was ready I did some clicking around the area, whatever interesting I can find around. This place was very scenic and serene in the morning.

There were some birds just outside the hotel, kept in a cage. Perhaps the hotel owned them. They were making this musical sounds early morning. But I bet they were cry for freedom. I took their shots too while they were trying to eat the leaves of a plant beside them.

Here is that ramp I mentioned earlier where yesterday the incident took place.
We had parked our bike right at the top of this ramp.
I and Anahita were all ready and roaring to go. So we told everyone we will start and cruise slow ahead. Catch us up later where we take a halt for tea.
As we started little down hill from here the sun was in such an angle that our shadows were looking dark, sharp and almost parallel to us. It was fun riding. Felt as if someone is along side.

After doing some twists and turns we found a tea stall which had just opened. We ordered a couple for us and just in 7-8mins the rest of the gang also arrived.

We enjoyed our talk here this morning. Also little discussion on how to move ahead from here, by what time should we reach Srinagar and stuff like that. Also a little flash back on last evening’s craziness we had together.

By 7am we were done from here and thought of riding for couple of hours before we take a halt for breakfast.
The sites we were getting to see from here onwards was just breathtaking. Felt like stopping almost after every curve.

The road was very smooth. Couldn’t see even a landslide in site. They were actually like what the BRO sign says – My curves are gorgeous. Go over them smoothly.
And we were really smooth on the corners.

Soon the road and a river came parallel from here. For quite a sometime.

Along the road here I read a sign Banihal 50kms ahead. I remember this place very well as last time on my way back from Leh I stayed there.
So we thought perhaps in Banihal we can have breakfast.
After riding for couple of hours, Banihal was just 7-8 kms ahead. But suddenly we noticed nice line of dabhas and each one making fresh hot items. The site of this place just made us all stop. Except Sumedh because he had already raced us ahead to Banihal.
We called him up and he said “you guys have breakfast, I’m far ahead. I will manage something here.”

We did miss Sumedh but the taste of the food was just taking over our minds. We don’t know what it was but some local specialty. I think we almost ate the entire morning supply of this place because after some time I saw the cook turning off his gas.
Man he too must have thought from where this dudes have come.

We spotted an army convoy after we left the breakfast spot. And this one was a big and long one. We stop by to interact with them. Get to know a little on their routine.
After we clicked a couple of rounds with them we headed for Banihal. We met Sumedh sipping a cold drink. And without wasting any time on small talk we quickly exited the town.

Just as we were cruising from here, Thapa overtook us and this is what we see. 2 local kids hopped on to his rear seat or rather yet over his luggage tied on rear seat.
After giving them a ride for couple of kms he dropped them and just in a span of minute only to see his rear tyre punctured. And that too with two sharp pins inside.
We took the advantage of tubeless tyres and rode till the nearest tyre repair shop. We spotted one just in 5-6 mins. All we needed was some air pressure inside the tyre as the tubeless tyre repair kit was already with us.
This is the best part of tubeless tyres, you can fix them so easily and so quickly.
After the tyre was all set we hit the road hoping nothing to strike now and we enter the Kashmir valley on our next halt.
After riding for 40mins the longest tunnel of India welcomes us. The Jawahar tunnel.

You cannot click photos here but managed a couple of shots randomly.
The first view of Kashmir valley is just 500metres down this road.
The view will just bowl you over.

This place or point is called Titanic view point. Why? Because at the edge it has this part of a ship which you see a similar one in the Titanic movie where the actors stand right in the front of the ship.

I think I clicked almost around 100-150 random shots here. From Anahita standing on the edge to Thapa and Abhi feeling little tired and sipping a drink.

Here is Sumedh arriving at the spot but I don’t know why he and Ashish preferred to ride more ahead. Perhaps they didn’t realize what the spot was, as you have to walk little 20 steps before you actually see the view.

A must to see during corners like these.

She was the first to go down the boat and off on that platform. Followed by me and later Thapa. Giving all the possible pose for some extra ordinary moments.

What is this! A double Titanic pose!!! Abhi and Thapa in act.

I don’t know where or what they are looking at. Don’t ask me.

There is a small canteen type thing near the point where you can grab yourself some snacks and drinks. Though the climate was cool but this was noon time so we started to feel a little hot.

And finally me looking down the valley. Hoping to come here again again.

Thapa feeling like he is spider man.

We spent almost an hour over here or I think little more than that. Since Sumedh and Ashish were already ahead we thought less photo halts will cover up the time.
But as we left from that place and started down hill, the sun started to hit us right on our eyes. Forget tired, we were now feeling sleepy. Had to take two halts in half an hour to put water on our face and inside us too.

By this time we had no idea where in the world were Sumedh and Ashish.
Considering Srinagar is just 50kms from here we assumed they must have reached by now. I had told everyone that in case if we split by chance then we will meet directly at Boulevard road.

Ones we started from here, only Thapa was along. We lost Abhi somewhere in traffic. But just as we entered the city Sumedh was waiting right at the entrance. A little sigh must say. As you get close to the city you are welcomed with this big and tall trees on both sides of the road. A bike in the centre will look nice but not when there is traffic.

There is a road just after 1 km up the city to the right which takes you straight to the famous Dal lake. Abhi missed it and we assumed he must have went on the town side. And Ashish was no where in touch.

We first reached Dal lake, parked aside the bikes and then started calling up both of them. Abhi was unreachable, guess his battery was dead.

Till we all are together I suggested Anahita and Thapa to go and check out the boat houses. See if we get a good deal. I will till then check with Abhi and Ashish.
I did get an unknown number constantly calling me but I ignored thinking it must be some marketing call. Finally after some times when I picked up it turned out Abhi shouting from the other end.
I gave him the directions and told where to come. He was with us in less than 5 mins. Now only Ashish was missing.

By the time Anahita and Thapa had gone I took the opportunity to click some pictures around the place.
From que of shikra to our bikes parked in the sun.

After half an hour finally Thapa and Anahita were back. And got us a good deal too. Now the main problem turns up….

It seems Sumedh has fear of water and was not ready to stay on the boat house. Here below Anahita is persuading him and Abhi scaring the shit out of him.

Finally he agreed and was willing to come only if he gets to sit in the centre. Big deal. But before we went on this Dal Lake fun and made the agent of teh boat house to convince me that its safe to park our bikes in the pay and park for the overnight.
It was not easy but ultimately he did and besides do we have a choice. The scary part was the sign board on the parking. Instead of parking at your own risk, it said if in case of explosion the damages cannot be claimed from them.

The view of the Dal Lake from any angle is just breathtaking. I took some shots while commuting between the road and the boat house, sitting in the shikra. The sound of the row was just like music…

We dumped all our luggage in the boat house and were now very hungry. We asked the boat house care taker to recommended a place around and he replied Hotel Lhasa is the best place for non – veg food and its close from the point where shikra drops you.

We hopped back on the shikra and were heading for that place. The skies today looked very clear so I was not expecting anything in the weather to change until late night. Even the tension it the city from the firing which took place two days ago was at minimum.

In fact there were quite a lot of tourists around the dal lake on this day.
This is the lane where the restaurant is located. You can notice the small red board on the right side of the photo.

You can see on our faces how hungry the stomach is.

And here now finally Ashish is with us. He had got lost somewhere in the city and spent some kms in circling. Finally we got through his call and we let him know where we were at. And how to reach here.

We ordered a lot of food here and all non – veg. Thapa was thanking God as it was not a Monday.
The food was really fresh and delicious. The care taker of the house boat really recommended a good place.

We rested for a while back in our boat house and as part of the deal we were told that a shikra tour of Dal lake would be given in the evening. Our rower was ready with Two small shikras which will be rowed parallel throughout the ride.

We got to know a lot of stuff about Kashmir from these two rowers that you don’t find it books.

We were at slow speed and first thing to pass by us was this Nehru park made for entertainment purpose for tourist who come to visit Dal lake.

It was crowded so we didn’t much bother to go there.

Shikras having a look of cabbies.

The two boats together and going at same speed was a fun. We all 6 could talk easily and splashed a little water from here to there.

Next interesting site as a part of the tour came the spot where the famous film Mission Kashmir was shot.

It was nearing sunset now. We were feeling a little sleepy so we requested the rower to take a to the nearest place where we can get tea. No need to go on the road. There is an entire market floating on Dal lake.

Here you can shop, buy raw materials, anything you get on road you will find it here.

Lost focus totally.

By passing through the channels of the lake we were now at the tea shop or better yet the Kashmiri Kahwa.

By the time the tea arrived, Anahita dosed off. Probably from the exhaustion of sitting behind on bike the whole day and not riding at all.

Here is how they look. The left one is tea and you know whats the right.

I think its famous in Kashmir only. Also its a healthier drink than tea or coffee.

Abhi pointing to the icy waters of the lake. They were not just cold but quite thick too.

After couple of hours we were back on land. The roadside of Dal lake. I just went and had a glimpse of our bikes. And they seemed fine. Felt tension free after so.

The line of boat house in the evening was quite a site. All colorful after sunset for few minutes.

And equally beautiful in the night.

We did a little shopping and took a stroll up and down the boulevard road. Bought back some supplies and by Dinner time we were not feeling that hungry. So for today we skipped it.

We all gathered back at the Shikra port and our friend the shikra rower was right there sitting for us.
We hopped in and he took us back to our house boat.
We were all sitting in one room, having a chit chat and thought why here why not sit on the main deck and have some drinks. We were having a few bottles of beer and a bottle of rum I think.
We all had one one glass and the night started getting cooler by the sip. And our bodies warm.
After some 20 – 25 mins we went in our rooms as dosed off. But before I closed my eyes something just hit me. Thoughts were flowing in my mind about tomorrow. This is where onwards the real tough part of the ride begins. You see Pathankot to Srinagar is more or less like Roopar to Manali in terms of road condition.
The real Ladakh tough road begins tomorrow. And its first time for the rest of the group. So lets see how it goes. All well, I hoped.
Oh and I forgot to mention one little detail, at the end of this day I came to know the boat keeper a young all high chap started to develop a crush on Miss Anahita.

Leh Ladakh Trip Log 2010
Today’s day started right on time. We were up by 7am and started the luggage mounting thing by 8am.

We hit the road by 8.30am and thought of having breakfast after riding some hour or so.
After exiting the city we came across this big board with large fonts of TOURIST VAISHNO DABHA.
Without second thought we all took the sudden left the place had and braked hard right at the entrance of the building.
As ignition turned off we smelled the aroma of butter right going inside our nose and tinkling our nostrils.
Stomach was sending call signs up the pipe….Ane do Ane do…

After we sat down we didn’t even need to look at the menu. Its Punjab just say it, n aloo paratha, n achar, n dahi, n lassi and makkan.

We loved the info on the sign board of this place.

Sometimes rather than the signs of breakfast – lunch – dinner items, the mentioning of neat and clean toilet makes you stop at the place.
After our stomach were full right up to the top we geared up and decided to take the next halt after couple of hours.
But just after riding half an hour my rear tyre got puncture.
P220 has tubeless tyres and a puncture guy was just near by so Ashish quickly fixed up the puncture and the tyre walla filled in the air with a rough psi. It was all just matter of 20 mins.
Ones we were done, Sumedh and Abhi were little ahead at this point and as soon Jalandhar was near there was quite a gap in between us.
We took a water and cold drink break here for some 10-15 mins and called up Abhi. We learned they were not far ahead.

From here Amritsar is not very far so thought of reaching there non – stop but just as we were passing the fields a sight caught our eye and made us stop.

And Anahita’s demand was to have a picture with them.
Offcourse the feeling of being with our own kind is just amazing.

The passing fields from here and the landscape was just true beauty. Felt like making a trip dedicated just to Punjab.

Amritsar city entrance was just 20kms from here so after riding for just 20 mins we saw the first big sign board saying ‘Welcome to Amritsar’.
Before entering we thought of taking a 5-10mins break to stretch ourselves. The climate also was getting better from here.

The flyover which starts at the entrance of the city helps you cut the traffic quickly. Its almost 2 kms long and gets you directly at the junction from where you enter the lane for Golden Temple.

The line was long but moving so after our feet was cleaned up at the entrance of the temple we moved in the que.

After going inside the temple and seeking blessing, on the way out we saw this nice orange fish swimming by. Very innocent site. Felt something different. This place has a serene atmosphere.

I forgot to mention, we had parked our bikes in the basement parking just outside Golden Temple. So with the luggage on the bike we cannot all together enter the temple complex and we were not scheduled to stay for the night in Amritsar.
So we decided to go three first and then 3 later.
Now after spending 40 -45 mins inside the temple complex we were back in the basement and Thapa, Sumedh and Abhi now went it.
We did some tp till they return. Some chat and photos in the basement and then a little shopping in the market for knives and stuff.

The basement where we parked our bikes.

After they were back we saddled up, fueled our bikes and before leaving for Pathankot found a Yamaha workshop to get the two R15’s checked up and also got my bike chain setting done. Though they should not as its a Bajaj bike but on request they were happy to.
My MP3 player had stopped working so Anahita also bought a video MP3 player from a local electronics shop. Sad thing after end of the trip back home in Mumbai I came to know the Mp3 player was fine just the ear phones had gone bad.
Anyways things happen for a reason they say. Till our bikes were checked, there was a bakery just next to the workshop so we grabbed ourselves a quick bite. And some cans of red bull.

By 6.50pm we were on the road to Pathankot. It was getting dark now and some patches were quite dark with very less traffic.

We took one tea break in between and then started riding in formation. In a straight line. I was right in the lead and were doing not more than 70kmph.

Oh I forgot to mention one thing. At the Yamaha workshop we got the headlights of P220 adjusted. So now my bike lights were hitting right at the road and I was seeing like a bat but not blind.
Was able to dodge potholes and fallen trees at ease when doing 70-80kmph.
In an hour we were in Pathankot. And what was the first thing to happen you will never believe it. A guy in an Maruti Esteem stopped by and told us he was chasing us from last 10kms. He was a military man and had seen our clothing and bike looked as if we were on long tour. The MH number plate convinced him. So he was trying to stop us for a talk and finally managed it at Pathankot.
He was happy to know of what we were doing and lead us in the Pathankot city where he showed us to a best classy hotel.
We took a photo with him and he wished us good luck for the trip.
My experience in Punjab has always been overwhelming with just gestures.
After a little bargain with the receptionist for a discounted tariff we headed for our rooms. The biggest one of the trip.

Just when we were all unpacked and relaxed Thapa was feeling burns on his back. A lot of heat boils or whatever we call them had popped up and that too in a design pattern.
So I had to volunteer in to powder his pack. Not something I’m proud off

We also took this opportunity to make designs on his torso.
Here is one,

We ordered lot of food tonight though didn’t eat much. I guess just wanted to see food after a tiring day.
After everyone dosed off I cleaned up my stuff and had a nice can of Red Bull while sinking in the tub.
The silence was charging me up. Finally my mind was ready for the big day tomorrow when we enter Kashmir.
Tomorrow the real fun begins…

Leh Ladakh Trip Log 2010
You won’t believe the photos, the total number of photos I clicked today was just 16. Why?
The mercury all the way up to 44 in New Delhi. The red heat burnt all the mood and enthusiasm of riding and clicking. At the start of the day the only thought came in my mind was when will today end? Or much feared where will it end! According to our itinerary, today’s night stop was Amritsar but considering we are starting my Delhi itself by noon I thought lets just ride till where we can. Or atleast till 9pm will see where we can reach.
New Delhi – Amritsar is possible to be do in a day’s time but because we slept around 3.30am last night, starting early was no way possible. Besides much needed rest was necessary considering what happen on Day 2.
So by 10.30am we all were up and by 11.30am started mounting all our luggage on our bikes.
It takes almost half an hour to finish doing this. Task itself is little tiring then riding in heat.

Ones we left Gurgaon we entered Delhi in half an hour. Luckily we didn’t got any traffic but I guess at noon that is believable. I had known the way to reach north of Delhi so in just 45 mins I, Anahita and Abhi were at the north exit.
But couldn’t see Thapa, Sumedh and Ashish around.
They arrived later in 20 mins. Got to know that they had stopped somewhere behind for not one or two but 8 to 10 glasses of limbu panni.
From here onwards I too started feeling a bit tired and exhausted. It was just couple of hours of riding and already this condition. Felt little strange.
Its here when I discovered that my body needs a lots of fluids. Felt like sitting inside a refrigerator.
As soon as we exited the Delhi border,Panipat was exact 60kms from here. And traffic was not minimal but zero. Don’t know how.
Since its a broad highway, decided to do this 60kms in less than 45mins. Which means keeping the needle above 100. It was doable. Actually felt like I’m inside a cockpit.
In 40-45mins we made it to the toll of Panipat. Took a drinks halt here.

Seeing the MH registration, the locals were happy to interact with us. Offered us their chairs, made us sit with them, asking about Mumbai. Stuff like that.

After this 20 mins break we were back on the road. It was 3.30pm and now we were feeling hungry. Now all of a sudden riding a little ahead we didn’t spot one decent place to eat. After riding some hour and a half finally a big neat place Thapa noticed on the other side of the road. The name of the place was 24. Strange name. It was not even 24 hours open kind of thing.

We had a feast and rested for half an hour. Our bodies were telling don’t leave this AC room. But still some good distance needs to be covered today. So we were back on the road by 6.30pm.
After riding for just an hour, the thirst for tea was setting in. We took a break where those Punjabi posh dabhas, McD and some sports brand outlets are together. Very common site on Punjab highways.
We spent not more than half an hour over here. And by now it was dark. So next 3-4 hours will be a night ride. Started preparing mentally for that.

In dark again my headlight issue was a threat. The upper going way up and dipper straight front. Nothing down.
So I started lagging little behind.
After getting divided, we were altogether after an hour of riding and just off the Ambala bypass.
From here we decided to stay together and ride at ease as road ahead had lot of diversions due to construction going on.
Now we were down to 60kmph. And after half an hour of boring cruise through the night, help came arrived.
A red Swift overtook us at 100kmph and the way he was going it seemed he was a local and by looks he knew even where the diversions are before the diversion sign used to pop up. So we took this chance and started following the Swift at his speed.
In just 10 mins I think he too realized what we were doing as whenever he was far ahead he use to slow down.
This one was God sent.
In less than 2 hours we were at Ludhiana city entrance. And by now it was 10pm so going more ahead would be stupidity.
We entered the city and quickly started looking for a lodge.
Just when 2-3 hotels we found together, we parked a side and Thapa, Abhi went in to check them out.
This is where the first best joke of the trip was cracked.
You see it was quite dark and the hotels too had shut off their lights. The street had kind of red light area feel. So of the three one was looking good and Thapa came with the suggestion that we should stay there. I asked what was the name of the place and he said Hotel Dhan Dhana Dhan.
Oh shit that sounded like a cheesy line for chitty chitty bang bang. You know what I mean
Anahita shouted no way we are going there. But after looking closely we discovered it was Hotel Dhawan. Just few letter lights were off and a shadow was on the side.
Couldn’t stop laughing.
Was tired but couldn’t fall a sleep quickly because of this climate.
Checked in to our rooms. We were not at all hungry so skipped dinner.
I believe Kashmir is just 200kms from here yet the climate was very hot. We were dying to feel a cool breeze or freeze our balls.
Still I shut my eyes hoping from tomorrow the best part of the ride should begin.
And must get something done for that damm upper dipper issue of P220.

Leh Ladakh Trip Log 2010
Day 2, log will be just like what we have titled it.
“The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday”
Today we intent to reach New Delhi by late evening or late night. Around 8pm to 10pm will be a comfort time we felt.
Started the day by getting up on time, getting ready on time but where we lost some was in tying up the luggage. Each bike had 2 bags. One tank bag and one on the rear seat and mine one on the saree guard.

It was hardly 7am and already I felt sun is getting hotter by the second. Its Rajasthan so I guess this must be common for people over here.

After today’s ride began the only thought on our mind was immediate breakfast, king size. And Thapa was just on a volcano stage for some heavy breakfast.
As soon as we entered the Udaipur – Chittorgarh highway our eyes were set on a good dabha. Within no time we found a decent one. It was next to empty but we were sure the food would be good. Yummy and delicious all the way.

Parathas was the item of the day. I don’t remember we ordered anything else.
After our stomach were full and a little freshening up. The road was calling.

After crossing Chittorgarh and heading towards Ajmer we were looking for some good photo opportunities. Eyes and mind was alert. And the opportunity came walking right towards us. Literally…

After some click around and doing some non sense we started moving towards Ajmer at higher speed. The highway here is like a runaway. Not much curves just straight and pothole free.

Even the pumps looks wide and big in this side of the country. We took a break here for water and drinks. Now the climate felt like over 100 degrees. Man it was hot.

Ones we started from here we hardly rode an hour and felt the exhaust you get after 3-4 hours.
You can notice by next break some of us were flat on road.

Here the only way to get Thapa up was to sit on him.

We took some clicks here and there and started moving ahead. Road was empty so now speeding was safe thing but also a boring thing.

Look how tiny he looks. LoL…

The Mongoose
Thapa, Sumedh and Abhi went speeding ahead from here but I, Anahita and Ashish took one more halt for a photo next to the biggest milestone we saw since the trip started. It was too hot to stop here but it was worth it.

After we made a speed run for 40-45mins we caught up with the SAT who went ahead. (Sumedh, Abhi and Thapa)
It was another time for a water or tea break. By noon we were hoping we might cross Ajmer but we were running an hour behind. Not alarming for now but felt this might come back to bite us late in the evening.

After an hour and half from here we were on the Ajmer – Jaipur freeway/ expressway.
I had been here ones before so knew those 99kms long 6 lane highway with no traffic and straight road was going to be NOT FUN at all.
Lately straight roads are becoming boring boring.
So only way to kill boredom is to do something fun and stupid. 2 RTRs and 1 R15 were ahead. Just we and Thapa took a small offroad patch for some time pass and entertainment.
I was always a off roading fan. Big time.

After this we caught up with everyone for lunch somewhere close to Jaipur.
It was a quick one. We didn’t waste much time here.
From here the traffic on road slowly started to go up. Abhi and Ashish were ahead and took a halt where the highway joins back to NH – 8 after crossing the Jaipur bypass road. Rest of us took a halt little before it as back had started to ache. I had known there is a big HP fuel pump somewhere near this patch.

These two pumps also have one of the cleanest loo I have ever seen. Even inside you will be peaceful. Almost felt like taking a shower here. You can see its evening pass 6pm but still hot, hot hot hot… Not even some wind.

After this the only easy day was yesterday…
It was sundown from here onwards. And traffic was quite present on the highway. New Delhi was another 175kms from here. I was guessing some 3-4 hours ride in the dark.
Ashish and Abhi were already far ahead of us and were heading for Gurgaon with just one halt.
We were far behind. But kept a pace of 60-70kmph. And when I went on upper headlight I was shocked to notice that beam were not adjusted properly. It was going straight up in the sky. So only dipper for me till this gets fixed.
On P220 this is something you cannot do in the middle of the night. We tried a bit, but no success.
When truck traffic started piling on from here we three got separated for an hour I think.
We were ahead and then Thapa and last Sumedh. After cutting the truck traffic, dodging the stones flying off from the under construction patches we finally saw the Haryana border. From here Delhi was not far so little sigh of relief.
Thapa arrived in just few minutes and now the wait was for Sumedh.
It was now 20mins gone and there was no sign of the small mongoose (Sumedh).
Little we were getting worried but after some 35-40mins now the fear was setting in. Oh man where is this dude. Hope not in any kind of trouble.
Near 50mins finally he arrived and with a good story.
He said today Thapa was ‘gone today’. It so happen that somewhere behind Thapa got stuck behind a truck and he waved and Sumedh to overtake from the side and he will be just behind. But Sumedh did not overtake and over that he was heading into Thapa from behind. Why? He was feeling sleepy and eyes were half shut :-O
At the very last moment he realized the R15 tail light is quite close and he quickly braked hard.
When he told us this incident, I and Anahita we LoL but Thapa was not amused. Not blaming him.
From here we rode together to Delhi. It was almost midnight and we were hungry. Plus no hotels will be open in Delhi at this hour on the highway. So I remembered there is a McD just before you enter the city.
I was keeping an eye on the big M you see from the highway. And in just half an hour it showed up.
By now tummy was making all sorts of noise.
We went in. Grabbed a bite. Freshen up.

And after this much deserved break, decided that instead of heading all the way to Delhi we will stay for the night just at the entrance of Gurgaon. I had passed the message to Ashish and Abhi too.
They had found an accommodation but only for 3 as it was the last room. Ones we met up with them I sent Sumedh to stay in their room and Thapa went ahead to look an accommodation for us.
Not far at all, we found a decent place just next door. And for some reason when we went inside the manager thought Anahita is a GUY. When she removed her head gear he realized then.
I guess hard night riding and some dust on our face can make us look different but gender change was the first to see here.
After just couple of minutes of talk we were flat on our bed. Thankfully it was AC as temperature that time in Delhi was close to 42 degrees.
By now I was convinced that its no fun doing Mumbai – Delhi in 2 days. May be perhaps solo or in a group ride of max 3 people. Otherwise go for Mumbai – Chandigarh/ Ambala in 3 days. Night halts in Ahemdabad and Jaipur.
THE ONLY EASY DAY WAS YESTERDAY…

Leh Ladakh Trip Log 2010
All motorbike trips start early in the morning. I have hardly come across any groups or guys who prefer to leave in the evening and no way in the night. Now the best part, I’m not at all good in getting up early to be at the meeting point 5 mins before time nor 5 mins after
I had told everyone to be at the meeting point, NH – 8 beginning near Hotel Fountain at sharp 4.30am. But I arrived there not 5 or 10 mins late but over an hour late.
Reason one, slept around midnight. And just before I went to sleep I was talking with Abhilabh only about the big day tomorrow. Reason two, refer back to para one.
My and Anahita’s luggage was packed and ready on my bike the night before. So I just had to get up, get ready ready, say my prayers and leave.
When 4.30am was the meeting point, I got up just 10 mins before that. First words out of my mouth was “Oh its okay…I’m little late. No problem. Guys will wait.”
LOL….
But I didn’t waste any more minute. I got ready in 20 mins and was off on the road heading towards Anahita’s place in Andheri to pick her up. (Had to remind myself that there is a pillion with me this time. Otherwise who knows I might have forgotten her for a second.
)
She was all ready and red. I think other than me everyone coming on the trip were ready and waiting at the meeting point much before time.
Well you can blame it on my age. 25 is a serious thing
Anahita’s parents and relatives all were up and giving us best wishes for the trip.
(P.S. Now since there is pillion so wherever I should use ‘ I ‘ in the trip log I will use ‘WE’ for myself otherwise someone will turn red again.)
We were back on the highway on 10 mins and were heading towards Fountain.
It was before Sunrise so the road was quite dark and bumpy. Knowing I have a brand new P220 in my hand I went a little slow. Who knows where gravel can come and hit you since Mumbai has tuned into a dust bowl from last couple of years.
In half an hour we were at Fountain. And I could see all faces were RED RED.
So the initial talks were just bad words and abusing for being late.
To start the DAY 1, I said a small prayer for our safe return and clicked the first picture of the trip.

In less than 30 seconds after this we put our helmet on. Zipped up the jacket. The machine was ignited and were off on the 6150kms long journey. From our homes to the roof of the world – KHARDUNG LA.
The highway had a little traffic early morning but as soon as we crossed a few kms the road ahead went empty. And cruising at 100kmph was looking doable. But just after few curse the first disturbing site we saw was a truck crashed in the centre of the highway.

For few kms after seeing this I just came down a little to 70 – 80kmph.
80kmph doesn’t looks far from being at 100kmph but trust me at 80 speed there is a great chance that if something comes in between you will have time to stop the bike before impact. At 100 its fly away….
Besides NH – 8 is quite curvy between Mumbai and Gujarat. So better of being little slow.
There was no rush in this ride so we had decided to take halt at every 50-60kms. Just a 5mins stretch will also do good for the long run. First stop was at Manor.
The town looked like a sleepy hollow early morning.

We (Myself and Anahita) were at last and Thapa was just ahead of us. We stopped here but realized the rest of the Gang missed the spot and were little ahead.
It was just beginning of the trip so we were so charged that didn’t consider the halts important. But trust me they are very much needed at the end of the day.
We started riding again and within 20 minutes all were back together at the first toll on NH – 8.

After this our first halt for breakfast was at Charoti. And the only word in our minds was TEA – The world famous drink. But the stomach was asking for garam garam mishal. And this is the last place where you will find a decent mishal and may be some eggs on NH – 8. After crossing in Gujarat its only veg food till Rajasthan comes.
We went inside Hotel Athithi. Started ordering lot of dishes. In 5 mins the table was full of it. We started hogging on the food but noticed Thapa was not touching any of it, not even an ounce.
And now he declares every Monday is his FAST… FAST FAST FAST….
Nahiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii……. Yeah tune kya kiya…… HAHAHAHHAHAH
Not sorry to tell you but we are shameless. We were hungry we started eating up. And he managed to survive through.
To kill some time Thapa went out and cleaned up his Bike. He is very loyal to his R15 let me tell you this.

After our stomach were full I felt now wasting any energy doing any time pass would be stupidity. Udaipur is our destination today and its 700 kms far. We cannot even use the word close.
The best part, road from here is quite straight and with minimal traffic we thought before 3pm we might make it to Ahemdabad.
Somewhere after crossing into Gujarat the bungee cables started snapping of RTR guys. We told them to keep going ahead and we took a detour in the first town we came across in search of bungee ropes. We found one shop but didn’t know how much will be needed. So we bought a quite lot. Now where to keep for time being!!! What better place than Anahita’s neck. She wore it as a mala.

We met ahead with everyone in quick time and started the speed run to Ahemdabad again.
It was couple of hour without break and first time our bodies were asking for one.
Strangely couldn’t see a decent spot or hotel or even a dabha at site. After covering some few more kms noticed a beautiful temple at a junction.
This would do for now. A little darshan and a good photo opportunity.

The break here was worth it. Soon after some 20 – 25 minutes we hit the road and this time it was non stop to Ahemdabad. Totally forgot about the 50kms break decision.
Just some 30 -35 kms before Vadodara we took a halt for light lunch. It was way pass 1pm. The place was quite crowded, I think over an hour got spent here. By 2.30pm we were back on the highway.
Some couple of hours down and we were kind of feeling sleepy.
Straight roads can be boring sometimes, ultimately making you feel sleepy.

The tea and some snacks were good but now all of a sudden it struck us, Oh my God where is Sumedh??? He is the youngest in the group. Just 19 year old baby according to Anahita.
All our eyes was on the road towards Mumbai. And in just 10 minutes later he arrived. Sigh of relief for everyone but me. I’m aware of his potentiality. So didn’t had any doubts.

But sometimes you will feel like kicking him.
Why? This I will tell you ahead when we reach Lamayuru.
Ones we were done with tea and biscuits the road ahead was awaiting.
We were feeling thirsty very quickly from here onwards. Mercury had gone over the roof.
And Thapa going without food. Man now thats energy. Or like what I say, its in his DNA to go on.

After crossing the Ahemdabad ring road slowly we were loosing daylight.
The day now was getting dry. We felt the climate too was getting little warm. Its evening. It supposed to go the other way around.
From Ahemdabad to Rajasthan border its just couple of hours away. We rode from the blue evening feel into the dry dead dark kind of atmosphere.
Now from tired muscles to something near fatigue was setting in.
I remember we were even whistled at the border of Rajasthan. We knew if we stop now whatever they will ask, we will get out of it. Its just something new for them, 6 bikes in middle of the night crossing state border. But we took a chance to save time and vrrrooommmed ahead.
I remember last time when I rode NH-8, it took me 2 hours to reach Udaipur. So seeing the current time, 7pm we were sure we will make it to Udaipur by 9 or max by 9.30pm
Ones fueled up, we rode for an hour. In another Udaipur should be near. This was the assumption.
But then a mile stone popped up. Udaipur 85kms
dghsbgijsdbgjosfgjsgsmnhlrhn’knhksfrnh;kfrnmhkljrhyiqu5y6835yu0rihgojk
:-O
:-O
:-O
:-O
:-O
:-O
:-O
In the night that was like another 2 hours and if bad roads with couple of breaks that will be almost 2 and a half hours.
It will be thoroughly a difficult task to reach Udaipur. We could have taken a halt somewhere near by only. But couldn’t spot a single lodge on the highway and when seen one it will be a bad one. Totally spooky.
So riding to Udaipur was the only thing we can do.
We took just one break near a toll booth and hoping this will be the last, started our cruise to Udaipur again.

Kept an eye on the next coming mile stone.
And in just 10 mins one popped up.
:-O
:-O
:-O
:-O
:-O
:-O
Udaipur 65kms.
Now the first ‘My’ and ‘I’ comes up in this log.
My mind was freaking out and I was already down to 10 in my strength scale.
65kms is just like Mumbai to Lonavale. But this is not home turf.
We didn’t wanted anything stupid or silly or may be serious to happen on Day 1 itself.
Our speed was now near 50 -60 kmph.
After another 20 – 25km patience ran out. And we started speeding up with eyes sharp.
A little paid off as I felt we must have covered atleast 20kms in last half an hour.
And it strikes again,
:-O
:-O
:-O
:-O
:-O
Udaipur 45kms.
My battery was next to be gone.
jigiwgpujwgbjrwebgjwreghruegtrty3578urbgjwrobgjowrgh…
I was in lead. Must not do anything stupid.
Kept my nerves and some how managed to cover those 45kms in next 50mins.
By 10pm we were at the bypass of Udaipur. Finally….
Finally… finally… finally…
Anahita and I were already stretched out. Thapa was along too. Rest of the 3 riders had fallen little behind. Till the time they arrived we checked into the nearest hotel. And to our luck they had a couple of rooms and food available.
Mind now started to relax now.
Luggage was dumped in our rooms. Food was ordered and we were only looking at each other for how we survived through the first day. Pheeeewwwww…..
Just before I closed my eyes I was just going through the things we did since morning just to learn where we went wrong and how we can correct next time we make Mumbai – Udaipur or vice versa.
This is what I felt.
1. Though we started very early. Still perhaps 1 hour more earlier would have been good. Or me arriving on time.
2. The beginning part should not be of cruise. Its like a relay. Take the first run at high speed. Atleast target 100kms distance in 1 hour so you will land somewhere with 80kms done.
3. Lunch we should taken on time. Just before 1pm.
4. The 100kms in 1 hour thing should have been done again between Vadodara and Ahemdabad patch.
We were scheduled to reach Delhi on Day 2, by evening. But nowadays what I feel is we do nothing in Delhi. Just a night stay always.
So the best way to cover these patches I think one should leave Mumbai at ease in late morning and stay for the night in Ahemdabad bypass. Day 2 head for Jaipur, starting early morning. And Day 3, very early leave for Ambala – Chandigarh or Ludhiana.

Leh Ladakh Trip Log 2010
Exactly one year back from today a trip took place which made a last impression on our minds. The 6 of us share a special bond over the things we went through during our journey. I could have posted the log of the trip much before but don’t know why I had been so lazy. Exactly one year later I’m doing it so, today. Let me take you back in time.
One day on a usual meet someone had popped a word among us, ‘Leh’. The one word which is enough to start a rocking conversation among motorcycle enthusiasts. The last time I had visited the place which was also my first time was way back in 2008 and that too in the month of August. Hardly any snow I got along the route. So this time instead of just talking about the place I instantly decided that Yes this year 2010 we will make a trip to Leh Ladakh – The highest motorable road in the world. And June is the month. I wanted to see some good amount of snow this time. Really…
Now who all coming raise your hand. To my surprise and shock many raised up. I actually had to shush some…. even those whom I had just met or hardly known showed interest. Sadly couldn’t take all along. In my first trip to the roof of the world I had learned that you need a small group of riders. 4-6 is a decent number.
So finally in couple of weeks I had the final confirmed list in my hand.
6 people in total, of which 1 came pillion.
Here they are,
Eldest in guys : Ramesh Thapa, a working person in Travel & Tourism industry, very active and very strong. I tease him with the phrase ‘Nepal DNA’. Oh also a big time fan of Rossi’s knee. He loves to corner his bike I mean by that. Bad roads, wet roads, slippery surface doesn’t matter to him. Rides a R15 – Yes Yamaha.

Next comes Abhilabh Wamorkar. Had finished his final year in LLB and was full on ready for this trip. An Apache RTR rider and good road sense for his age. His specialty, he won’t let you eat peacefully throughout the trip. Why? You will know ones you read some stories I will tell you ahead. A full on entertainer. You will roll down laughing and cry sometimes.

Ashish Patil, one more R15 rider in the trip. Yes Yamaha guy and big baby of the group. Loves to remove average from his baby R15. Good riding skill for his age. A funny man and studying currently.

Sumedh Rane, also studing currently. He was the small baby of the gang. Pinky as some were calling him. I don’t remember how exactly he landed on the post but it definitely suits him. And a very tiny thin person with good control on his bike, shit scared to go alone in the night and there is more things I can tell you about him but in the stories. Also rides an Apache RTR.

The Lady, Anahita Pagdiwalla. She came pillion with me on the Pulsar 220. She is the HR in the company where I work which obviously makes her my Boss…
An adventurous person in the most stupid daring ways you can imagine. I always had to keep an eye on her to make sure she is not endangering herself or others on any day. Sits perfectly as a pillion like in terms of balance and weight. I hardly felt anytime that she was sitting behind.

And now finally me myself, Om Vaikul. I work as website manager in the same company. I have dangerous boss who gives me leave for rides only if I take her along. I keep enjoying the situation because I look at it in a different perspective and photography is my thing.

The ride to the roof of the world began on 21st June, 2010. We didn’t know what to expect and what beholds for us ahead. The road has many stories to tell. But we knew one thing, this trip was going to be the best one of our lives. Memories to cherish and tales to tell, was going to take place in next few days. No worries or office tension. Just a free mind, long road and heading straight to the roof. Wow…!! Its like a dream world.
